My lastest read.
Insights into lives of immigrant workers in Chinese cities.
Especially captivated by how the author relates the speed of tranformation going on.
and how she perceived rise of individualism as not an ill of the society,
but a force liberating these girls, who rose to believe that
as individual, they mattered.
that their lives are important regardless of their status.
"History begins when one leaves the family".
collective conscience, seeking concensus,
something traditional Chinese are so instintively rooted too,
might really have been a backward force pulling us back.
"the nail which stands out has to be hammered down".
Well, I shall partake in their blind faith,
in believeing individuals mattered and is larger than the sum of the collective.
and start defamiliarising myself with the familiar...
once my overseas trip commence.
Poignent portrayal of immigrants' souls, a good read.
