Gut feelings

There was this point of discussion with a friend about gut feelings.

How does one actually know whether another person is the right one? After all, if people do, there wouldn't have been so many break ups, divorces, heartaches and the likes.

Does one actually know? Or are there any rule of thumb that we can assess people with?

I thought there are. Rather basic ones like whether goals in life align, whether one feels comfortable sharing about intimate information, whether a couple can appreciate each other's strengths and weaknesses and still find them mersmerizing. Whether there is room for mutual growth.

Whether there is room for mutual growth.

These are some of the most fundamental criteria.

The next thing is, what's the duration of assessment such that one knows all these criteria are met?

Perhaps it's not so much of the length but quality time spent observing and engaging each other. When one feels apprehensive and tries to rationalize, that's a gut feel pointing to a mismatch. At the point of apprehension, one knows deep down that it would not work out ultimately. We do know, don't we? Except we selective sway ourselves to the yearning of the heart.

Sometimes it's no longer about facts than it is about feelings. However, when feelings and thoughts align, one can be rather optimistic that one has found a potential soulmate.
